The Landfall Tradition

The 13th Annual Collegiate Golf Tournament

Thursday, October 23rd - Sunday, October 26th, 2014

Supporting UNCW Scholarships and Golf Programs Since 2002

Image descriptionThey had played in 11 of the 13 Landfall Traditions, more than any team with the exception of host UNCW.  And, on a beautiful fall Sunday in October of 2014, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons became the first team ever to win three Landfall Tradition Championships. The win was especially impressive as it came against one of the best fields the tournament has ever had, including Alabama who finished second by four shots, and #1 ranked South Carolina, #5 ranked Duke, and #9 ranked Arizona.  Notre Dame and South Carolina finished tied for third.
Coach Dianne Dailey’s team was second after the first day of play, tied for the lead with Oklahoma State after day two, and finished strong on day three to win by four shots.  And even though they had not won any tournaments in the past three years, winning here was not new to coach Dailey, as her team had won back-to-back Landfall Tradition championships in 2007 and 2008.

Individual tournament honors went to Ashley Holder of Central Florida whose three day score of a seven-under-par 209 beat Nanna Madsen of South Carolina by one shot and Emma Talley of Alabama by two shots.  The top ranked player in the country, Leona Maguire of Duke, finished seventh.
Host team UNCW, led by junior Meghan Theiss, who shot a three under 69 on Sunday, finished in sixteenth place.

Many in the sizeable Sunday gallery thought this may have been the best Landfall Tradition ever.  The field was especially strong with 9 of the top 21 teams on hand, the top ranked individual was competing, the Dye Course was in superb condition, and the tournament was blessed with three days of spectacular fall weather with temperatures in the 70’s.  Even a gusty wind on Sunday added to the enjoyment as players playing the par 5 eighteenth hole had the wind at their backs and could often go for the green in two.  That day the hole yielded 6 eagles and a near miss double eagle when a second shot hit the pin and stopped two feet away.

And, of course, the great Southern hospitality for which the Tradition is famous was present in abundance.  Players, coaches, and the many parents and local fans on hand could not voice enough praise for the over 300 volunteers who show up year after year to help make sure this tournament continues to rank as one of the finest in women’s golf.

Congratulations to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and thanks to all who made the 2014 Landfall Tradition a huge success.

The 2014 Landfall Tradition three-day tournament was held on the Country Club of Landfall Dye Course October 24th through the 26th.  The annual College/Am tournament to raise monies for the UNCW golf scholarship fund will be held Thursday, October 23rd, the day preceding competitive play.

Image descriptionSince its inception in 2002, the Landfall Tradition has hosted teams from 62 universities, over 1200 players from 31 states, and has raised a quarter of a million dollars for the UNCW golf program.  In addition, each year the Tradition provides a positive economic impact to the Wilmington area of approximately $250,000.

The Tradition has earned an outstanding national reputation as one of the finest women’s college golf tournaments with many teams returning year after year and others hoping for an invitation.  Southern hospitality abounds, and the Landfall community embraces the annual event that is made possible with the help of over 300 volunteers from the Wilmington area.

Image descriptionVolunteer

No tournament of this size and quality can be successful without a strong volunteer base. This has been a key factor in the tournament’s success in the past.

Once again, we are looking for volunteers for the Fall tournament. We hope to welcome back volunteers from previous years but would like to extend the opportunity to anyone who may have an interest. Areas of need are diverse and schedules are flexible.

This is a fun yet important way to be a part of the tournament.
