Field Announced for the 17th Landfall Tradition

By Bill Paris, Landfall Tradition Marketing Chair

It seems like last year’s most exciting Landfall Tradition on record has just ended, but the dates and exceptionally strong field for the 2017 event have now been announced. The 2017 Tradition, the sixteenth annual, will be played on the Country Club of Landfall’s Dye course October 27th-29th, with the popular College/Amateur event on Thursday, October 26th.

The field of 18 top women’s teams, hosted by the UNCW Seahawks, will include four of the nation’s top ten ranked teams and seven of the top twenty. Alabama, Florida, Duke, and Furman ranked 3rd, 5th, 7th, and 9th, respectively, lead the field which also includes 2016 Landfall Tradition defending champion South Carolina.

Seven different conferences will be represented with five teams each from the Atlantic Coast and Southeast conferences and four from the Big Ten. In addition to the above named teams, Central Florida, Clemson, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, NC State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Penn State, Purdue, and Virginia will compete.

Over the past fifteen years, the Landfall Tradition women’s field has included teams from 55 universities and 32 states with over 1000 players. Last year, we had the most exciting finish yet, with three-time winner Wake Forest and South Carolina ending tied after three days of regular play. A comparison of fifth player scores for Sunday (the normal tie breaker formula) was made, and the teams were still tied. Then, for the first time in Tradition history, the tie was broken by comparing fifth player scores from Saturday play, giving South Carolina their first Tradition win.

As always, over 300 volunteers are needed to insure another successful tournament. Please consider helping and/or playing in the popular College/Am round on Thursday. Sign-up information is below. And, be sure to mark the dates of October 27-29 for some of the finest women’s college golf in America.

The 2017 Landfall Tradition will be co-chaired by Jeff Mays and Jack Bartow.

No tournament of this size and quality can be successful without a strong volunteer base. This has been a key factor in the tournament’s success in the past.

Once again, we are looking for volunteers for the Fall tournament. We hope to welcome back volunteers from previous years but would like to extend the opportunity to anyone who may have an interest. Areas of need are diverse and schedules are flexible.

This is a fun yet important way to be a part of the tournament.
