The Alabama Crimson Tide entered the tournament ranked second in the country. They jumped off to a 10 shot lead over the Duke Blue Devils on the first day of play and never looked back, winning the tournament by eight shots. All five players of the Alabama Crimson Tide finished in the top eleven individually and Stephanie Meadow, top ranked in the country, was the medalist at three under par for the tournament. Part way through Sunday’s final round, Duke narrowed the gap between them and Alabama to six shots but Alabama pulled away. A very young Clemson team came in third with South Carolina fourth.

Although the mornings were brisk with temperatures just above 40°, the sun warmed up each day resulting in great playing conditions. The Landfall Dye course proved challenging with only Meadow and Duke’s Yu Liu breaking par.  The warm weather and the presence of local favorites Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest, Virginia, and host UNCW led to good attendance and plenty of enthusiasm. UNCW’s Lori Beth Adams continued her solid tournament play finishing 16th to lead the Seahawks.

Many of the teams were repeat visitors to the Tradition, but comments from them and newcomers alike were that it is the finest tournament they play in. One coach described his experience as “Southern hospitality at its best”.

Since its inception in 2002, the Landfall Tradition has hosted teams from 62 universities, over 1100 players from 31 states, and has raised a quarter of a million dollars for the UNCW golf program. In addition, each year the Tradition provides a positive economic impact to the Wilmington area of approximately $250,000.

Image descriptionThe Tradition has earned an outstanding national reputation as one of the finest women’s college golf tournaments with many teams returning year after year and others hoping for an invitation. Southern hospitality abounds and the Landfall community embraces the annual event that is made possible with the help of over 300 volunteers fromthe Wilmington area.

Play starts at 8:00 AM, Friday morning, October 25th. Admission and parking are free. Guests are welcome.  Please come and see great college golf and root for your favorite university.

Image descriptionVolunteer

No tournament of this size and quality can be successful without a strong volunteer base. This has been a key factor in the tournament’s success in the past.

Once again, we are looking for volunteers for the Fall tournament. We hope to welcome back volunteers from previous years but would like to extend the opportunity to anyone who may have an interest. Areas of need are diverse and schedules are flexible.

This is a fun yet important way to be a part of the tournament.
